Starting Point

Like it or not, to be a successful scientist nowadays you must be an effective public speaker. Regardless of field or career path, scholars must persuasively communicate the impact of their research in front of different audiences as well as educate others. The good news is: there are quick ways to enhance your scientific presentations and public talks. Why not improve your skills by using some of the best techniques from toptier American and British scientific speakers?

Aim

After this training you will be able to

• develop your own individual public speaking style,

• create fresh and entertaining openings for your presentations,

• appear more relaxed and entertaining during your talks,communicate the impact of your work in an exciting and engaging way.

Content

  • Stylish and powerful ways to open and close presentations

  • Story telling methods, anecdotes, witticisms, soundbites and other rhetorical techniques commonly used by American and British scientists
  • Communicating and engaging effectively with your audience

  • Mastering Q+A rounds

  • Do‘s and don’ts from popular talk formats, e.g. TED Talks


      Methods

      Structured group discussions on best-practice examples, practical exercises, simulations and role playing with verbal and non-verbal devices, short presentations with individual feedback from the trainer. Max. number of participants: 8. Course language: English.

      Requirements
      Participants are kindly asked to bring a 10-minute presentation of their choice (either a presentation they have already given or one which they would like to give in the future). The presentations should be in English and can use a Power Point Presentation, but this is not required. Participants should have sound English language skills.

      Assuming successful participation, you receive a certificate of attendance.
