Starting Point

“So, what do you do?” This could be a simple question, but offthe-cuff it is also infinitely complicated to break down in a brief and compelling way what is familiar and every day to you: your research. Why not use an “academic pitch” to put forward your expertise in an understandable and targeted way, to arouse interest in your research, and maybe even attract third-party funding. In this training we will work out how to get to the heart of what makes you and your research stand out in a concise and memorable way.

Aim

  • You will become more aware of what distinguishes you as a person and a scholar.
  • You will be able to explain the content and added value of your research in a concise and memorable way.
  • You will be familiar with the structure of an academic pitch.
  • You will know how to grab the attention of your listeners and how to hold their interest in your pitch. 
  • You will benefit from helpful tips that raise your professional profile. 

Content

  • Identification of your uniqueness and the high quality of your research
  • Structure of an academic pitch and possible creative elements
  • Extraction of a clear core statement
  • Simple and persuasive language
  • Clear and powerful body language

    Methods

    In practical exercises, you will work out your own academic pitch and have the opportunity to make a presentation followed by individual feedback.
    Max. number of participants: 10. Course language: English.

    Notes

    Please prepare a short self-presentation of 1.5 minutes and tell us what you do professionally, why you like it and who benefits from it. Student workers are welcome, subject to availability.
