Writing peer reviews and responding to peer reviewers

WWB Area | Learning field

Science communication | Publication

Starting point

Peer-reviewing scientific manuscripts prior to publication is - as much as writing one’s own - a key task of scholars and a valuable service to the academic community. There is not much systematic information or training available on peer reviewing or on responding to peers‘ reviews and editors‘ comments. Instead, learning by doing is predominant. This training provides hands-on knowledge to researchers at the early stage of their careers who are just starting to write and review papers and who wish to rethink their practice.

Aim

This training aims at improving your skills in efficient, fair scientific peer reviewing. You will practice structuring and writing reviews and hearing your own review(s) discussed. You will also get an overview of how to respond to reviewers. We will produce examples of answers to reviews you have received on your own manuscripts.

    Content

    • Reviewing: possible workflows, checklists and major do´s and don‘ts based on examples
    • Practicing reviewing based on your own examples,
      discussing your experiences
    • Responding to reviews: codes and etiquette, possible workflows
    • Practicing responding to reviewers based on own examples, discussing your experiences

          Methods

Based on background knowledge provided in the training you will practice giving reviews and responding to reviews. We will exchange and discuss personal experiences in open discussions. Max. number of participants: 15.

          Notes
