Addressing the intercultural challenge of group work with students from different backgrounds

WWB Area | Learning field

Teaching and Learning | Basic

Starting point

Group work is great isn’t it? Students can apply theoretical knowledge and also have to organize themselves as a team. Why then does this often not work out well when, for example, incomings join the course? Your local students might complain that the international students have no clue how to write a proper report, do a presentation, are late for meetings or don’t contribute. So, how can we integrate students from different backgrounds so that all – local and international students - will benefit?

On completion, participants should be able to

  • recognize cultural influences on group work
  • revaluate assessment methods for appropriateness in multicultural classrooms
  • identify methods for focusing both on the process and the result of group work
  • discuss limitations of multicultural group work

  • Relevant cultural dimensions impacting group work like communication and conflict styles, attitudes towards leadership and risk-taking, relationship and task orientation
  • Aspects to be addressed in teambuilding (adapted version of Tuckman)
  • Assessment methods and their impact on diverse teams
  • Decision criteria for using group work in a specific multicultural classroom

Critical incidents, interactive presentations, small group discussions, awareness raising exercises. Max. 16 participants, course language: English.

The course is particularly interesting for instructors who have incomings in their courses and use group work as one of their learning tasks.
