Multicultural group work - how to make it work for you and your students

Group work is great for applying knowledge and improving team skills, isn’t it? But academic teachers observe certain barriers and hindrances besides many synergetic and enriching aspects in learning behavior that impact the intended learning outcomes: Why do we see more of these hindrances in multicultural groups? Are your local students complaining that international students have no clue how to do tasks properly? Are they complaining that the international students are late for meetings or don’t contribute (as expected)? Do they fear to get lower grades?
On completion, participants should be able to
- recognize cultural influences on group work,
- identify strategies for integrating and supporting all students in such group work and learning settings,
- evaluate assessment methods for their appropriateness,
- discuss limitations and their consequences for one’s own teaching.
This course will address these and other issues academic teachers
observe in their lectures and seminars about diverse groups. We will
outline strategies for integrating students from different backgrounds
so that all – local and international students - will benefit.
- Relevant cultural dimensions impacting group work like communication and conflict styles, attitudes towards leadership and risk-taking, relationship and task orientation
- Decision criteria for using group work in a specific multicultural classroom
- Aspects to be addressed in teambuilding including team formation and member selection
- Assessment methods and their impact on diverse teams
- Communicative and didactic strategies for academic teachers in multicultural learning groups
Part 1: Virtual Interactive presentations, group discussions
Part 2: awareness raising exercises, critical incident analysis, group work
Max. number of participants: 16.
The course will be held in two parts – the first part focuses on relevant background information and issues that participants want to raise, the second part at the beginning of the summer semester will apply these insights through awareness raising exercises, critical incident analysis and small group discussions.
