Starting Point

The competence to initiate and manage projects in multicultural contexts is important nowadays, as the result of paradigm changes from routine work to project-oriented work and from specialized „silos“ and monocultural working groups towards heterogenous project teams. Our students - engineers, scientists, and managers in spe - presumably will need such skills in their professional life. Also, from a methodic-didactical perspective, this project-based learning features intrinsic motivation and long-lasting knowledge - in contrast to passive „consumption“ of information.
The application of project management tools into the learning process can cause some cultural challenges. On the other hand, such a setting can be used to improve competences of students to collaborate in complex and diverse groups and networks, termed by David Stark’s as „The sense of dissonance“1.

At the same time, following questions arise from the teacher’s perspective: Which tools of classical and agile project management are useful for the subject I teach, as well as the modules I have to comply with? How to create a direct learning project, by means of case studies and/or in cooperation with partners outside the educational institution?


By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Relate potential conflicts in working groups to different cognitive and cultural backgrounds and design the appropriate frame of the learning project to maximize learning outcomes and innovation out of every learning group;
2) To understand the different patterns of thinking, described by cultural dimensions, and   apply „universal“ planning, risk management and controlling tools into the learning process of heterogenous learning groups;
3) To recognize the different communication and conflict styles of the students on the cultural and/or individual level and to manage the learning process „in spite“ of those;
4) To reflect the own role of the teacher and establish an effective feedback culture based on a personal responsibility approach from every student/project team member;
5) To examine the applicability of classical or agile project management tools into different subjects, modules and educational institutions.


    • What do Project Management and modern Didactics have in common? Where can they collide?
    • Which collaboration and communication style differences are individual, and which are probably culturally tied? Which different levels of culture can influence the learning process and/or collaboration in project teams?
    • What does the iceberg-model have to do with stakeholder analysis and learning culture? How to apply cultural dimensions designed by Hall, Hofstede and Triandis in order to organize effective and fruitful collaboration in the learning group and/or the project team? How to predict conflicts and to use tensions productively?
    • What do controling tools and feedback methods have in common? How to establish an open and productive feedback culture in the learning group, if students come from different feedback cultures, due to their early education and character? How to reflect my own role as a teacher in their learning processes - mentor, project manager, project owner? How to execute my function as supervisor in a project-based teaching?


          Interactive input, peer-feedback, discussion, various exercises with elements of agile project management. Max. number of participants: 15.
