Equal Opportunities during COVID-19: Course Program 'Take-Off'
Registration for courses offered as an extension of our current course programme ended on 25.09.2020. You may still register for courses listed down below by following the appropriate link.
Combining caring responsibilities as well as family and professional life is a huge undertaking for those working in research and teaching, particularly for scientists in the doctoral phase of their careers. The situation is made all the more difficult by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. It is often not possible to plan the time required to look after children and family members requiring care. To help you emerge stronger from these uncertain times, we have developed a portfolio of courses entitled Take-Off!. This is the name given to a surfing technique which allows the surfer to stay on their feet and make the right moves even when riding the highest of waves.
Goal and object
The extended Take-Off! portfolio of courses is part of the package of measures for 2020 aimed at promoting equality of opportunity during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The program offers training in self-management and time management techniques, work techniques and strategies for strengthening resources:
- Completing a doctorate
- Academic writing
- Work techniques and self-management when working from home
- Mental health
Courses are aimed at doctoral candidates and academic staff working at the University who are responsible for looking after at least one child residing with them and/or caring for family members. Depending on the availability of places, courses are also offered to student assistants looking after a child or caring for a family member.
Details of the coronavirus package of measures for 2020 and who to contact
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic confronts
researchers caring for children or family members with a number of
very real challenges. Often, having to assume such responsibility is
something you cannot prepare for and represents an enormous challenge
in terms of organization and providing care. The risk of a COVID-19
infection calls for increased protective measures and ties up
additional resources for those providing care in their homes. Those
looking after children cannot easily plan and face difficulties
ensuring their children are looked after at all times if daycare
centers and schools have to close down again as a result of infections
or if their children have to isolate at home. More often than not, the
responsibility for unpaid work such as household chores, childcare and
caring for family members falls to women, reinforcing gender
To promote equal opportunities during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the Executive Board at TU Berlin has agreed a package of measures financed by funding from the Berlin University Alliance (BUA). The measures will run until 31.12.2020 and consist of three components:
- Financial support for
care-related expenses
