Starting point

Good scientific practice is a key prerequisite for the credibility, acceptance and quality of research findings and overall scientific progress. But how do young scholars find their way through the grey areas between good scientific practices, questionable practices and misconduct?.


Participants will become acquainted with the central principles of good scientific practice. They will learn how to ensure their personal research integrity and protect their work. Participants will learn to identify misconduct. They will be trained in how to deal with such conduct and learn where to obtain advice and support in the event of a conflict.


The course teaches basic values, rules and norms of good scientific practice for practical application. The following topics will be examined in depth:

  • Good scientific practice and research misconduct
  • Management of data and sources in the scientific process
  • Authorship and the publication process
  • Individual and institutional handling of misconduct
  • Supervision as a tool for safeguarding good scientific practice
  • Regulations and guidelines


    Case discussions, problem-oriented small group learning, plenary discussions, information transfer, case studies with practical application to the participants’ own work. Max. number of participants: 15. Course language: English.


    The course is primarily aimed at people with a basic knowledge of research. More experienced researchers can systematize and deepen their knowledge.
