Starting Point

This course examines how to develop powerful focus in your scientific and academic writing – an infallible guide to developing the best structure and effectively communicating your ideas to your target audience.  We look at how to systematically improve the impact, clarity and accuracy of your chosen words.  You will receive a toolbox of methods including a range of easily-applied ‘quick tips’ that will improve how seriously your ideas are taken.

Aim

You will know which process to follow when approaching an important scientific and academic piece of writing: How to start, develop and express your ideas, plus a checklist of conceptual and practical filters to apply to your work to edit and improve your earlier drafts.

    Content

    The following writing skills will be examined in the context of a variety of types of scientific and academic writing, such as general-specific texts, problem-process-solution texts and data commentary texts:

    • Tips for writing productivity – how to start, improve and polish your work
    • Nailing the problem of structure
    • Achieving powerful writing: flow, impact, clarity and accuracy
    • A checklist of editing techniques
    • Avoiding the most common mistakes

          Methods

          Inspirational input, with ample opportunities to practice. In this course, you have the chance to examine a piece of writing of your own and obtain feedback from your colleagues and individual feedback from the course leader. Max. number of participants: 12.

          Notes

          This course is of benefit to all PhD students, most particularly to those currently working on a text for publication.

          The content and methods of this course are similar to those of Scientific Writing. We therefore recommend to attend only one of the two courses in this semester.

          For employees, assistant lectures, registered doctoral candidates at TU Berlin and junior scientists at HU, FU, Charité, the course is free of charge. If you do not belong to these groups of people, please contact  for information on fees.
          Requirements
          You should have a knowledge of English at B2 level minimum.
          Participants please keep a laptop/PC with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.

          Completion
          Assuming successful participation, you receive a certificate of attendance.
