Starting Point

We all enjoy communication when we feel understood, listened to, connected and invited. So how do we create the sense of empathic connection when attitudes, strategies and skill sets differ and even challenge us? Working in the world of academia can involve specific challenges as a result of the variety and density of tasks i.e.making difficult daily choices, delivering/receiving information or balancing a diverse mixture of needs.

If we communicate clearly, take care of boundaries, transform anger and learn how to foster understanding, we can overcome the tensions between us, sail through communication barriers and overcome difficult exchanges with ease and clarity. 

This training offers helpful practical resources for dealing with tricky everyday situations, developing your personal skill-set, using empathic tools for the world of higher learning.


After your participation in this training you will have

  • gained insight into helpful tools for everyday communication,
  • reflected on and practised how to overcome tricky situations and
  • balanced your authenticity with empathically connecting to others. 


We will cover the following contents in this training:

  • The Model of NVC - 4 steps
  • Empathy vs. honesty
  • Clarity and efficiency in requests
  • Dissolving barriers
  • 4 ways of listening
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Connecting in challenging conversations
  • Transfer plans for workspace and fostering team-spirited groups


Short theory inputs, varied group work, discussion plenaries and practical exercises will enable a diverse learning experience that allows for fun and insightful learning.
Max. number of participants: 12


This 2-day training is suitable for anyone willing to reflect other own communication skills, learn new tools and practise ways of contributing to a more empathic working and learning environment. 

Student workers are welcome, subject to availability.

For employees, assistant lectures, registered doctoral candidates at TU Berlin and junior scientists at HU, FU, Charité, the course is free of charge. If you do not belong to these groups of people, please contact  for information on fees.
