Paid to research: how to prepare successful fellowship applications

WWB-Area | Learning field

Research Management | Project planning | Advanced

Starting Point

For young researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships are a common way to take their career to the next stage: to get their research project funded and realized. More than other funding sources, fellowships allow to keep the focus on one own’s research and to implement the project with high flexibility over time. However, because an ever-increasing number of doctoral and post-doctoral researchers apply for these fellowships, the likely of obtaining funding has over time decreased. Intensive preparation is the foundation for a successful application.

Aim

The course supports participants in learning how to adequately prepare their own successful applications for PhD and post-doctoral research funding, in particular research fellowships, both in Germany and abroad.

    Content

On the first day, participants explore some core issues in two separate sessions (a group in the morning and a group in the afternoon):

    • Identifying the most suitable funding bodies.
    • Understanding what evaluators are looking for in an application.
    • Keeping in touch with the funding body (do’s and don’ts).
    • Exploring how to enhance one’s own image to “stick out from the rest”.
    • Structuring the writing of the funding application itself.

On the second day, participants meet the trainer through a series of one-to-one meetings to discuss their specific situation, eventual challenges they are facing and possible ways forward to prepare successful applications.

          Methods

This is an online workshop. Theoretical information, practical exercises, plenum discussion, partner work and an exclusive one-to-one session with the trainer for enhanced tailor-made support. Max. number of participants: 15.

          Notes

The course is targeted at doctoral candidates and young post-doctoral researchers. No previous knowledge is required. Participants should have English language skills at least the B2 level. Student workers that are seriously determined to obtain a doctorate are welcome to apply, subject to availability.
