Speed reading in STEM sciences

Starting Point

Scientific work involves a significant amount of reading. How about increasing your reading speed by 25-100% (depending on text difficulty and English proficiency) while at the same time improving your reading quality…and boosting your motivation?

  • Variation of different reading techniques and strategies
  • Better concentration and motivation
  • Special approaches towards scientific texts

 Content

1. Pre-course Webinar session (2h, fixed date, course language is English)

  • How to read scientific papers & concentration

2. Speed Reading Online Course (possible in English or German)

  • Flexible training during 3-4 weeks, no fixed times/dates
  • 10 units (45-60 min. each) 
  • 4 week long trainer accompaniment

3. Feedback Webinar (1h, fixed date – to be agreed upon in our first webinar)

  • Half of the online course should be finished
  • Feedback on everyday scientific reading – including individual text examples

4. After-Course Webinar session (2h, fixed date, course language is English)

  • More feedback on scientific reading/examples & memory retention

5. Optional: Alumni website, refresher events, e-mail series (in German only)

Methods

Eye movement training (physical aspect), using contextual cues, previewing and rate variation (cognitive aspects), Different practical exercises and tests with individual results.
Max. Number of participants: 12.

Notes

The focus will be on STEM sciences with regard to the choice of texts. However, participants from other fields are also welcome.

Student workers are welcome, subject to availability.

For employees, assistant lectures, registered doctoral candidates at TU Berlin and junior scientists at HU, FU, Charité, the course is free of charge. If you do not belong to these groups of people, please contact  for information on fees.
Requirements
Participants should have English language skills at least the B2 level.
Participants please keep a laptop/ PC with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.
Completion
Assuming successful participation, you receive a certificate of attendance.

Your binding participation is very important to us. On the one hand, our courses are connected with high costs. On the other hand, we plan much group work and work interactively with you. Hence, should you be unable to attend the entire course or should you be prevented from attending the course at all, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can allocate the place to other interested persons. In the event of multiple unexcused absence, we reserve the right to exclude you from further ZEWK courses.
