Career (re)orientation for international researchers
WWB-Area | Learning field
Work and management techniques | Strategic Career Planning
Starting Point
Considering a move from academia can be daunting for researchers as you have spent years focusing on your specific fields and skills. It can be challenging to reframe your skills and experiences into a different context. Identifying your needs, wants, and values in a career context is also not always easy. And for researchers with an international background, the transition out of academia can be especially challenging, as the German job market differs in many ways from experiences you may have had abroad.
Using tools from career coaching, we will explore your past experiences, career choices, motivations, and values to develop a deeper understanding of your personal career narrative. Through the process of visualizing this narrative, you will be better prepared to make conscious career choices that incorporate your values, needs, and talents. You can gain more confidence about your career decisions, and be more likely to embark on a sustainable career path on which you can flourish.
Aim
At the end of this training, you will have created a compass for your future career path, including a personal roadmap to support you in your choices and to build your personal career bridge from academia.
Content
To create your personal compass and road map for your future career path, we will explore together the following themes and questions:
My Profile: What do I have to offer?
- Where have I been? What have I accomplished?
- What skills do I have? How can I best frame these skills for myself and for potential employers?
- What do I enjoy most about my work, and what do I excel at?
My Career Compass: What do I want?
- What are my values, and how have I experienced them in past work? What might that mean for my future career path?
- What motivates me, and what do I find challenging in a workplace? What do I need?
- What do I want to accomplish?
My Career Path: How do I get where I want to go?
- What do I know about my field, and what do I need to find out? What tools and strategies exist to help me understand the job market in my field outside of academia?
- How do my goals and values fit with the options available to me here in Germany?
- How can I use what I’ve learned about myself to guide me in making career decisions? What would help me feel confident in my decisions?
- What concrete steps can I take to achieve my goals?
Methods
Whole group discussion, individual reflection, peer-coaching/pair work, small group work, interactive input, one-on-one coaching.
