WWB-Area | Learning field

Science communication | Presentation |Advanced

Starting Point

Like it or not, to be a successful scientist nowadays you must be an effective public speaker. Regardless of field or career path, scholars must communicate convincingly the impact of their research in front of different audiences, including committees, lay audiences, other researchers and students.

The good news is: There are quick ways to enhance your scientific presentations and to communicate your results in a truly engaging, exciting and convincing way. Why not improve your skills by using some of the best techniques from American and British top scientific speakers? These simple techniques will quickly set you apart from other researchers and improve radically your presentations.

Aim

After this training you will be able to

  • develop your own individual public speaking style,
  • create fresh and entertaining openings for your presentations,
  • appear more relaxed and funny during your talks,
  • communicate the impact of your work in an exciting and engaging way.

    Content

During this training we will cover the following aspects of presentations:

    • Stylish and powerful ways to open and close presentations,
    • paratactical communication, power pauses, soundbites and other rhetorical techniques commonly used to present convincingly,
    • creative ways of structuring your presentations,
    • how to engage effectively with the audience, creating a meaningful scientific exchange,
    • how to master Q+A rounds and criticism playfully and elegantly,
    • do's and dont's from popular talk formats, e.g. TED Talk.

    Methods

Structured group discussions on best-practice examples, practical exercises, simulations and role plays on verbal and non-verbal parameters, short presentations with individual feedback from the trainer.
    Max. number of participants: 8.

    Notes

Please bring a 10 minute presentation: either a presentation which you have already given or one which you would like to give in the future. Your presentation should be in English and can (does not have to) be a power point presentation.
