Academic poster full circle – Concept, design and presentation

WWB-Area | Learning field

Science communication | Design | Advanced

Starting Point

Poster sessions are an integral part of almost every scientific conference. Their purpose is to highlight research results, visualize them, and stimulate discussion. To draw your audience in, you need a crystal-clear message, a text format optimized for best readability and well-chosen graphics. And above all, you need to think well through how to organize your research content on the required format. Designing a poster is just half of the story – an effective and convincing presentation is also required to bring your message across. This training concept focuses on the conveyance of design and presentation skills and on the practical training how to apply these skills for an effective science communication.

Aim

After the participation in this training you will be familiar with all the necessary information and techniques to design a compelling poster and to effectively pitch it.

    Content

The first part of this training covers the main principles of design and layout techniques, such as typography, color, proportional balance, visualisation, and the use of design grids. You will also learn how to conceive and develop a clearly structured poster by reducing the scientific content to the most significant points.

The second part takes essential presentation skills into focus, such as conceptual considerations, dramaturgy and structure, main aspects of verbal and nonverbal communication. This training will be rounded off with the preparation and training of pitch-presentations with video recording and will be completed by a feedback session.

    Methods

Input, discussion and analysis, practical exercises, group work, pitch presentations, video recording, feedback. Max. number of participants: 12

    Notes

You are warmly invited to bring the content material (text, images etc.) for a poster
or a recently designed poster. If you come well prepared, you may come away from this training with a finalized poster.
