Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT): Using diagnostics and feedback for effective teaching

Starting Point

Blended learning has shown to be effective to encourage students to engage more intensively with the course content and to achieve deeper understanding, in particular in STEM disciplines.  Most recently, blended learning has become a necessity and a solution in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this workshop, we will present a specific form of blended learning (Just-in-Time Teaching or JiTT) that combines specific methods for diagnostics and feedback to address key concepts and student difficulties.  We have used this approach repeatedly, in various STEM courses with 50 or 500 students.

Aim

Participants will

  • identify factors for successful implementation of JiTT,
  • design tasks suitable for JiTT (in multiple-choice and other formats), aligned with the participants’ learning goals,
  • analyze student work in the context of JITT in order to identify barriers to student learning and
  • decide how online and face-to-face instruction can help students overcome these barriers,
  • reflect on their roles as teachers.

The intent is to bring the participants as close as possible to the implementation of JiTT in their own teaching.

    Content

    • Defining requirements and designing effective online materials for diagnostics and feedback
    • Writing online items in multiple-choice and open-ended formats and assessing student responses
    • Planning face-to-face teaching activities to help students overcome observed difficulties
    • Encouraging students to participate and helping students develop necessary study skills
    • Implementing JiTT efficiently and incorporating it in your daily practice
    • Contrasting JiTT with related methods (flipped classroom, inverted classroom)
    • Recognizing JiTT as a method that uses multiple flows of information
    • Aligning JiTT with course learning goalsProfessionalising ongoing supervision processes.

          Methods

          Case studies, group work, individual work (designing their own materials), brief lecture sections, plenary discussions. Max. number of participants: 16

          Notes

          This workshop is intended for instructors (professors and academic teaching staff) from all disciplines. Examples will be taken from STEM (= MINT) disciplines. 

          Teams of instructors working on the same or similar courses are especially encouraged to attend.

          Requirements
          Participants should be able to read technical course material and to discuss their observations in the classroom and concerns about teaching in English. Participants are expected to sign up at least two weeks prior to the workshop date in order to be able to complete a preparatory task that will be assigned through ISIS-Moodle (constituting a workload of about two hours).

          Participants should have sound English language skills and advanced presentation competence.

          Participants please keep a laptop/PC with video and audio function or a webcam and headset ready.
